Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a gun violence incident that occurred late Saturday at the Howe Community Park area as officers were dispersing an unlawful assembly of a crowd of several hundred.
Before the Gunfire
Law enforcement initially responded to the Arden-Arcade park at approximately 6:30 Saturday evening after obtaining information of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. After that, another report was received regarding a reported physical confrontation unfolding inside the park.
Aerial units flew over the park but was unable to locate Howe Park shooting Sacramento the reported altercation. However, deputies found that an enormous crowd had assembled at the park without official sanction.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies moved to clear the area by forming a perimeter and issuing commands over loudspeakers directing the assembled crowd to go home. Approximately 15 minutes were allowed for attendees to disperse.
Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 gunshots rang out. The shots sent the crowd running in all directions. Law enforcement quickly moved to looking for those injured.
Four Gunshot Victims
By the time the scene was secured, four victims were located with gunshot injuries. Those injured — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their early to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to nearby hospitals. Emergency physicians noted that two victims were in serious condition, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. Fortunately, each of the four victims was stable.
Metro Fire Sacramento also responded and assisted with medical triage the injured prior to hospital transport.
Physical Evidence
The main crime scene was confirmed to have taken place along Cottage Way alongside the Home Depot store located at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Crime scene investigators identified extra shell casings along Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were observed in the wrought iron fence alongside the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence confirmed that a shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from along Cottage Way toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. That Home Depot location was put under lockdown as a precaution. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives stayed at the location well into the night.
Detainees in Solano County
Reports confirmed through law enforcement radio communications established that a vehicle identified as a Kia had been detained in the Solano County area. Four detainees were detained. Sheriff's units were traveling to Solano County to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Footage analyzed by investigators revealed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
